Woodford covers just about everything middle-graders might want to know about energy in this offering from the See for Yourself series. He defines energy, giving examples of both potential and kinetic forms; explains how energy is released and travels; and provides detailed discussions of many energy sources. Chapters are composed of heavily illustrated double-page spreads that offer a main text and several sidebar comments. Most illustrations are full-color photographs, but captioned diagrams (particularly the excellent, four-page centerfold explaining the energy cycle) offer much detail for readers to ponder. Several of the later chapters address energy usage by humans, comparing individual countries' consumption of energy to their production of it, and suggest ways of combating global warming. Capped with facts and figures, a time line, and a glossary, this will be welcomed by debaters, report writers, and browsers. A worthwhile addition to most collections. Kay Weisman

Excellent scientific school text (6th to 9th

Excellent scientific school text (6th to 9th, I suggest) to explain the different types of energies in our earth/universe. It provides excellent illustrations with one large fold-out in the center. It's a slim volume, but bold in color and content, slightly oversized in dimensions, making it very appealing and "unscary." I used this book to prepare me as a high school science tutor. It presents complexities in basic but savvy explanations. From there, I proceeded to higher-level texts and could help my students in depth. Without this one book to start me off, I would have had to disguise my ignorance. I originally found it in a used-library book sale, a hardback in good condition. I bought about 3 more copies from Amazon, one sent to a friend who is home-schooling her child, and I used the others for additional copies in my classroom.

WARNING: MISSING PAGES!

I honestly do not know if this book came from Amazon or one of the retailers here. My son loves science and all things related and enjoyed the book so I gave it two stars instead of one. It has a section on global warming. . . sigh. I suppose books I read as a kid had a section on global freezing.
The thing that ticked me off the most was it was missing four pages. I got my hands on another copy because my son wanted to see what he had missed. It was missing SIX pages, although a different section. Both were same ISBN 978-0-7566-2561-0, 1st American edition 2007, printed in China.
Bottom line, it has some good pictures and interesting facts, some quite arcane. If your kid likes science and is roughly 8-12, they will like it, but only IF you can find the entire book!

Good book!

I purchased this book for a 6th grade science teacher. I believe it works well with what they are currently studying (energy).
