A fantastic guide to a fantastic cooking video series

Watching Greg Easter's cooking videos on YouTube is a bit like peeking into the kitchen of a fine restaurant and learning how the chef made your food taste so good. I've been a fan of Chef Easter's YouTube channel CookingInRussia for several years now, and I am always learning something new about food and professional techniques that no one else demonstrates. These are not dumbed-down recipes made easy for the home cook. These are for the home cook who wants to ramp up their knowledge, skill, and enjoyment of making food with incredible flavors. Chef Easter is also quick to reply to questions asked on the channel and readily shares his knowledge and skills. It is obvious that much preparation goes into the videos, which are easy to follow and understand. His recipes are impressive

The YouTube channel companion books are a great idea, and an excellent addition to the YouTube videos. It's a unique idea and shows a level of commitment that goes beyond the video.

Chef Easter has made many improvements to Volume 2 of the channel companion series. In this volume, the complete recipe is included with the ingredient list and the procedure. Recipes can be prepared without having to follow along with the video while cooking.

Just seeing how a great recipe is prepared would be enough, but Greg Easter takes the extra step of teaching exactly why certain techniques and ingredient combinations work to take flavor to the next level. Volume 2 starts out with a section that covers how flavors are produced, such as the chemistry behind flavor development (including Bacon Chemistry) and details about flavor ingredients, flavor pairings, and detailed information about herbs and spices. He also expands on subjects touched upon in the video series, such as steak tenderness.

Chef Easter is the real deal and a rarity in the food video world. He gives real recipes based on real science and professional techniques that the home chef can not get anywhere else. Since Food Network shifted from education to entertainment (a point the Chef readily makes), there are few places to get sound cooking advice at a professional level. Many "blog chefs" on YouTube are quick to steer the viewer wrong with crazy ingredients and techniques.

Many CookingInRussia recipes are now my family favorites, and I have made some of them many times. I might not make every recipe Chef Easter has, but I do learn something every time I watch the video. I can't thank him enough for the food education I have gotten from his videos.

And if you are into tropical cocktails and want to ramp things up to the next level, I highly recommend that you read Greg Easter's Cocktails of the South Pacific and Beyond Cocktails of the South Pacific and Beyond - Advanced Mixology. It's much more than just a recipe book, it includes quite a back-story about the recipes that you will find interesting.

All his cook books deserve space on your kitchen counters. His cookbooks are the only cook books that stay in my kitchen all the time. And I have an entire bookcase for the rest in our study. He has the best recipe for whatever you are looking for... I promise

Made me a better storyteller. And won me major boyfriend points.

In short: This is an excellent resource for anyone who wants to be better at telling stories. This is a skill I've wanted to develop, so I started with this book. Really glad I did. In fact, it ended up winning me major Boyfriend Points.

I offered my copy of the book to my girlfriend when she had to attend a company retreat and participate in a get-to-know-you exercise where everyone had to tell a two-minute story. We're talking about standing up and telling a personal anecdote in front of an audience of about fifty coworkers, managers, and direct-reports. Oh, and my girlfriend has social anxiety. So, needless to say... there was a good bit of hand-wringing and deliberation over this exercise.

Imagine how happy I was when she came back from the retreat glowing and excited to tell me about how well her story had gone. Not only did it feel good and comfortable to tell, but it also got a lot of positive feedback. Her coworkers really enjoyed it. She had directly applied many of the concepts explained so clearly and entertainingly in Long Story Short and hit the ball out of the park.

Buying Long Story Short is a favor you can do for yourself if you want to be better at storytelling. It might even burnish your reputation as a partner.

For anyone who needs to communicate better.

This book forced me to stop making excuses and perform a real, self examination to how I professionally communicate. Though the bulk of my job in history is telling other people's stories, the exercises in this book were a real benefit and there were plenty of areas in the margins to highlight and make notes. Thanks Leitman for helping this lady become a better communicator! I highly recommend.

In "Diaspora: A Very Short Introduction" the American historian and author, Kevin Kenny, provides a sweeping overview of the concept of diaspora: what the term means; how it is defined and recognised; how this meaning has changed over time; how the concept might be applied and deployed; and to what ends. Throughout, he draws upon the main global contemporary contenders to a claim of diaspora -- the Jewish, Armenian, African, Irish and Asian -- using each both to illustrate the key characteristics of diaspora and to weigh the claims of each against those criteria. The meat of this book, therefore, is concentrated in three central chapters that examine the history of migrations, the connections formed, and the potential and opportunities for return which each individual example of diaspora presents or affords.

The book details two contrasting approaches to diaspora currently in play: the first a comparative method, with an emphasis on commonality of origins and a strong nationalistic focus; the second concentrates more charting on the movements, connections and interactions of peoples rather than their origins - a "routes" approach to the study of diaspora as opposed to one of "roots". The author is at pains to highlight the dangers that a comparative method for defining and approaching diaspora risks introducing, particularly over-simplification through generalisation, causing diverse populations to appear more homogeneous than is warranted and resulting in a descent into essentialism, with diaspora becoming little more than a form of biological destiny for those caught within it. On the other hand, utilisation of diaspora as a framework of interactions within which to construct a model of human migration can greatly enrich our understanding of this seemingly essential aspect of the history of our species, by allowing the transcendence of the limited perspective afforded by a simple study of migrational history, centred "around the dualities of push and pull, emigration and immigration, uprooting and transplantation, usually applied to the relationship between one sending country and one receiving country".

The book also carries additional cautions about the modern ideas of globalisation of diaspora, with implicit warnings that diaspora lies open to exploitation, especially by governments eager to extend their sovereignty and augment their economic power at home through appeals to a previously displaced peoples now living in other lands -- particularly, of course, where these now enjoy advantageous economic circumstances. As the author also states, diaspora is a powerful source of cultural and political mobilisation.

In spite of its title, the book's historical coverage is extensive and surprisingly deep for its meagre 100 or so pages. It is, however, an easy and engaging read. The book would make an excellent introductory reader for those going on to study the subject in depth but equally, it can be read and enjoyed by anyone who is merely curious and with no specialist background knowledge. And whatever your background, after reading this book, you may never be able to listen to reggae in the same way ever again.

This is Ruby's vivid and graphic portrait of a man and a woman engaged in a relentless war with each other, and with them selves. Set far in the future, on strange worlds and between the stars, the story stays grounded and remains focused on two characters who's interstellar quarrel leaves a wake of gruesome suffering and wrecked starships. The characters are fueled by love, obsession, and self-discovery, and are well fashioned by Ruby's raw narrative.

The Right Thing Hurts is an emotional heart-breaking book! I had so many ‘feels.’ Yes, it is action-packed but the character development is what held me hostage for more. Clara is such a well-written character. I’ve read so many books where the female lead is one-dimensional but Clara is such a complex beautifully damaged character. I found myself cheering for her. I cried with her. I hoped with her. I want more Clara!

Yes, it is action-packed and there are some very disturbing scenes but it was the characters who were so compelling and well-written that made it a great book. The author allows you to see into their minds and understand their motivations. They are such ‘real’ characters and not just plot devices. Some of them I loved and some I loved to hate ----> read it and you'll see exactly what I mean.

From the first word until the last, I couldn’t put the book down. I just had to know what happened next.

Now, I have to go buy more tissues.

History as it needs to be written.

Cockcroft's honest, unambiguous writing is a testament to truth-telling in the tradition of Howard Zinn; highly informative and inspiring. I would recommend it as a primer for anyone who wants to connect the dots between the struggle of Mexicans being exploited in the tony restaurants of New York City and the fury of an Arizona redneck police force profiling every brown-skin person driving to work; the investment banker living a luxurious life-style in Manhattan and the small businessman going out of business in a Mexican border town; the Mexican veggies we drop into our cart at the local supermarket and malnutrition in just about every Mexican state. What I most appreciate about Cockcroft's writing is the consistency of the contextual historical content, with an efficiency of language other authors take volumes to reveal - Cockcroft does it in 141 tightly written pages (he may also, of course, have a great editor). It's a short little book to which I will keep returning when I lose my way trying to navigate the historical and present complexity of a country that is as rich as it wanting in economic, social, and political justice for the vast majority of its people; not unlike the good-old-USA.
