Fascinating Insights

The author does a terrific job describing the value of early exits to investment returns and improving the odds of a successful liquidity event.

His insight that you should secure alignment from the very beginning on your exit strategy among the founders and early investors is invaluable. As he points out, most boards and management teams miss the opportunity to secure their maximum valuation because they are too focused on their day to day efforts, do not think to sell until business growth falters and do not appreciate how long the sale process can take.

Most startling was his description of the inherent conflicts of interest between VC investors vs entrepreneurs and angel investors. It is perfectly obvious once he explains the underlying business models but it was a new distinction for me.

The research done on the outcomes of companies that take VC funds is also interesting. For example, VC investments increase the likelihood of firm failure as the VC investment model requires them to block profitable early sales in order to compel a try for the much less likely 30x multiples. They also bring a likely delay of 10 years or more to the exit.

The book is well organized and written by a subject matter expert whose industry presentations posted to YouTube are well worth your time. I highly recommend this book for any founders or angel investors looking to improve the odds of a successful exit for their effort and risk.

Their greatest skill is growing businesses from values in the tens of millions to values in the hundreds of millions. Large companies also have to grow. They believe the best way to accelerate their growth is to acquire exciting young companies.

This book makes a great rational case for smaller

This is a tremendous book that provides a clear insight into a strategy that more (technology) entrepreneurs should adopt. Not every business needs to be "venture fundable". Venture funding has it's own downsides, notably the divergence of the entrepreneurs interests and those of the VC investor. This book makes a great rational case for smaller, more "exit-able" businesses.

the armagedden prediction

I read this book by the theologist Hal Lindsey many years ago. It was a book written in the 80's about the apocalypse armageddon or the end of the world to come. If you thought Nostradsamous was accurate, you haven't read about Hal Lindsey's revelations based on the bible, prophets such as Nostradamous and others. He predicted in the 80's about the WWW3, THE ANTI-CHRIST AND EVEREY COUNTRY THAT WILL BE INVOLVED IN THE LAST WA ON THE PLANET, THE NUCLEAR HALACUST TO COME;IE AND NOW, 1999, WITH THE U.S.( EEC OF TEN CONTRIES ) ,NATO, GOING AT IT WITH SERBIA,YUGOSLAVIA, RUSSIAN TENSIONS,CHINA EMBASSY BOMBINGS WAS PREDICTED DEADLY ACCURATE BY Hal over ten years ago. You wanted to know who's going to be involved in the serbia war, the countries involved in ww3, the armageddon, apocalyse, etc. Then this book will blow your mind at its predicted accuracy on the end results of what's going on right now in serbia, nato, the russians, china, ww3, the anti-chirist ( he tells you his identity ) and the nuclear halacaust and the end of the world to come in the few short years we have left before were just lke the dinosaurs.

It scared the hell out of me.

The first time i read "The Late Great Planet Earth" i was in my early 20's. At that time it didn't have that much of an inpack on me. Now i'm 54 and have re-read the whole series. Put it this way,,,,i have returned to church after a 25 year absence. Draw your own conclusion.

Required reading 101

For those who don't know much about these times we are living in, this is required reading. It's a great deal to get two books in one. You can even get the used books of this that they offer for 99 cents. Even with shipping cost of around 4 bucks and change (something like that) it's still cheaper than a store, if you can find it. If you find something he says that you may not agree with, fine, spit out the little bone, and keep reading. If I wrote a book you don't have to agree with every little thing I say. But the rest is extremely good information. Your faith will increase, I believe, by reading it along side your Bible.

This is an erudite yet remarkably engaging examination of the visual representation of slavery in Europe and North America in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Wood (English, Sussex Univ., UK) includes a variety of materials, ranging from sophisticated oil paintings to crude woodcuts, based on their influence, popularity, and longevity. Many of the illustrations will be familiar, but Wood does not assume that they speak for themselves and examines them in a new light. He addresses the semiotic codes used to represent slavery and explains how they came to symbolize cultural memory. This study focuses on four areas: the middle passage, the iconography of slave escape, Uncle Tom's Cabin, and the torture and punishment of slaves. It does not include images of slave rebellion, day-to-day slave life, the slave trade itself, or emancipation. The images are both compelling and repulsive in their exploration of how memory is organized and visually depicted. An excellent bibliography further enhances this groundbreaking work. Why Slavery Matters.

Throughout this book, Wood stresses the fact that there is absolutely no way to truly apreciate the severity of slavery through recollection, but that it is important to try. It is important to understand just how widespread the phenomenon was, and how this tragedy in human history still resonates loudly within our psyches. One major point of the book is how populations who had been heavily involved in the slave trade, starting with the British and extending to the US North, began to sugar-coat their involvement by airing opinions of moral superiority over others. The best and most famous example being Harriet Beecher Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin", where Africans who were enslaved actually end up better off than their free African counterparts due to the fact that they become Christian. The slaves were redeemed through their brush with western cutlure (ie slavery). Other examples of visual evidence include the middle passage slave ship diagrams, runaway slave reward notices, inhuman iron helmets and shackles. Each area examined is brought to life by Wood's seemingly unending arsenal of background information and nontrivial ties to art history.

The book's real strength lies in how it can in fact bring the reality of slavery back, to confront western culture with it as something that still lingers, but with an almost Freudian degree of mass-denial. Slavery in the US existed longer than it hasn't, the economic ripple-effect alone should be self-evident. We are still in the wake of this dark era in our culture; Wood puts us on the therapist's couch and makes us remember, rather than suppress, these memories.

Old ethnic and interethnic ties changed and became more difficult to sustain when Euro-Americans arrived in the region and imposed ideologies and government policies that constructed starker racial boundaries. As Arizona began to take its place in the national economy of the United States, primarily through mining and industrial agriculture, ethnic Mexican and Native American communities struggled to define their own identities. They sometimes stressed their status as the region's original inhabitants, sometimes as workers, sometimes as U.S. citizens, and sometimes as members of their own separate nations. In the process, they often challenged the racial order imposed on them by the dominant class.

Appealing to broad audiences, this book links the construction of racial categories and ethnic identities to the larger process of nation-state building along the U.S.-Mexico border, and illustrates how ethnicity can both bring people together and drive them apart.

Border Citizens

I'm doing research for my family and this book really hits the right cord. How it depicts events from the 30', 40' and so on when my Mom and Dad were struggling to make it for our family. I come into the picture in the 40's picking cotton around Florence as a kid. Some information I find is ,at least in my case, incorrect. We got paid 3cents a lb for cotton and I, we, could pick over 300lbs per day and that was not bad money then. Also it states the cotton season started in Oct. For us it started in mid August till Dec 31st. Nevertheless, it is a interesting book and made me aware of alot of back ground I was never aware of. It's well written, lots of research, and interesting.
