About the Author

Amy E. Olsen grew up in a book-loving household in San Diego, California. While in elementary school, she and her brother competed to read the most books during the library’s summer-reading program, and whenever there was a question about a topic at the dinner table, a set of encyclopedias was within an arm’s reach. She earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in English from San Diego State University. She has taught a variety of courses including reading, composition, film, and literature in traditional and online classrooms. Her interests include traveling, hiking, bicycling, reading, gardening, taking photographs, and watching movies. She enjoys combining these hobbies while exploring the world; she has visited every continent and dreams of eventually traveling to every country. She has written four textbooks: Reading Now, Interactive Vocabulary, Active Vocabulary, and Academic Vocabulary. The three vocabulary books came out in sixth editions in 2016.

PREFACE

This book continues to be about interest rates, how they behave with changing market conditions, and how risk can be managed. We are concerned not only with primary securities, like Treasury and corporate bonds, but with derivative securities, like forward and futures contracts, debt options, swaps involving interest rates, credit and currencies, and mortgage derivatives. We will see also that embedded options in a bond or mortgage-backed security, like call and prepayment options, can be valued and option-adjusted spreads can be determined. Finally, our concern is with the management of a fixed-income portfolio and the tradeoff between risk and expected return.

Throughout, a rich body of theory is examined, as are the empirical evidence and practice that bear on the theory. The first half of the book is devoted to the foundations for understanding interest-rate behavior: market equilibration, funds flows between financial markets, mathematics of bond and moneymarket yields, inflation, maturity, coupon rate, default risk, and bond price volatility. The remaining chapters use these foundations to explore a variety of derivative securities and their uses, the influence of taxes on interest-rate differentials, and the social allocation of capital. The institutional backdrop is presented in conjunction with concepts, risk, and practice—not as separate chapters. I believe this approach is more lively than the chapter-by-chapter institutional descriptions seen in most books.

Because of the rapid change in interest-rate practice and theory, this edition represents another substantial revision. By chapter, the important changes follow. All data in chapter 2 on the flow of funds have been updated, and a new section is added on the total debt outstanding for various major sectors of the economy. Chapter 3, Foundations for Interest Rates, has been streamlined and cut back in places. The empirical parts of chapter 5, Inflation and Returns, have been substantially reworked, and the section on inflation-indexed bonds and Treasury TIPS is largely new. Significant changes appear in chapter 6, The Term Structure of Interest Rates; these changes deal with modeling the term structure, as well as with relevant empirical work. Bond portfolio management, with respect to duration and convexity, has been strengthened in chapter 7, and the arbitrage efficiency between zero-coupon and coupon bonds is illustrated with an actual situation.

Perhaps the greatest changes occur in chapter 8, Default and Liquidity Risk. A new section is included on liquidity, and substantial changes have been made in the treatment of credit ratings, default losses and migration patterns, quality yield spreads over time, high-yield debt, and yield spreads with respect to maturity. The chapter also has been resequenced. Chapter 9, the first of several derivative securities chapters, contains 4 new section on forward contracts. In addition, implied repo rates are explained. Chapter 10, Derivative Securities: Options, includes a new treatment of interestrate cap, floor, and collar valuations using "caplets" and "floorlets." A new section on interest-rate corridors also has been developed. Chapter 11, Derivative Securities: Interest-rate and Credit Swaps, contains an entirely new section on credit derivatives, an important market that is continually developing. Also in this chapter is a new section on pricing an interest-rate swap, and an example is presented. The chapter has been reorganized in other ways as well, and the treatment of secondary market values is expanded.

Chapter 12, Embedded Options and Option-Adjusted Spreads, includes a new section on putable bonds and their valuation. The section on empirical evidence bearing on the call feature has been largely reworked. Chapter 13 on mortgage securities has been completely rewritten to reflect important changes in mortgage-backed securities. Overhauls of the treatment of mortgage derivatives, modeling prepayments, and to-be-announced (TBA) pricing are evident. Chapter 14, Controlling Currency Risk, has new sections on the Euro currency, on foreign-bond portfolio management, and on emerging market debt. Finally in chapter 15, The Influence of Taxes, the treatment of municipal bonds has been substantially reworked to explain better the nature of the market and the valuation of municipals in relation to taxable bonds. Throughout, the book has been thoroughly reviewed and updated. Only the more substantive changes are mentioned here.

Compact compendium of financial information

In this text, Van Horne combines elements of both finance and economics; this results in an outstanding compendium of financial theory as it relates to financial markets. However, the breadth of the material and the detail to which the reader is exposed necessitates succinct dissemination in such a compact text (300 pages). I've found more information in this paperback than most hardcover texts (800 pages or more) that I've read, and at half the price.
My fellow students and I plowed our way through it in one 400-level course in the finance program at EWU. This is advanced material and not for the faint of heart. As I remember it, there was a sizable number of students with weak hearts about half-way through the quarter.

About the Author

TOM REILLY is a member of the Directors Guild of America and has worked in the motion picture industry for the past thirty years. Veteran of more than forty films, Reilly worked with Woody Allen on classics such as Crimes and Misdemeanors, Husbands and Wives, Manhattan Murder Mystery, Bullets Over Broadway, Hannah and Her Sisters, Purple Rose of Cairo, and Zelig. He has also been assistant director on other major motion pictures such as Big, The Prince of Tides, Glengarry Glen Ross, The Pick-up Artist, Sabrina, and Great Expectations. Eric Lax is dead-on right. Author Tom Reilly, who has worked on more than 40 films as an assistant director and associate producer, has given film students and those of us who just love to watch films an invaluable guide as to how a film ends up on a screen. Just read the titles of some of his chapters:
1. Learn the vocabulary of film. 2. Learn the language of the set. 3. Pick your ten best shots. 20. Face the realties of the budget. Even fifty million won't seem like enough. 37. Assume nothing. 41. The set has chemistry: Big egos...Big money....Big art. 45. Sweat the small stuff--routinely. and the last chapter 50. Always have a nice lunch.(Ya gotta read this chapter alone several times if you're "in the biz" or plan to be!) The chapters are all fast-paced and bring us right on the set with Tom. His spot on behind-the-camera descriptions of film industry folks just sweeps you along into his world.

This should be a must read for all film school students. It is one of the few film books I've read that really brings the day-to-day details of making a picture (egos and union issues included!)to one's brain cells. The individual experiences really impart mental picture lessons that a student will never forget.

I originally bought it for my daughter who is in film school, but I'm keeping it for my own 'film-buff' library and buying another copy for her, my budding film-industry-worker-to-be!

Great, Practical Tips From a Pro

For those of you currently making films or planning to make them soon, this book is a VERY helpful list of pointers on how to approach the topics of filmmaking. Some tips tend to apply more toward million-dollar pictures, but almost all of the information in here can be applied to a low or no-budget film when you scale down the message. I've read too many filmmaking books to count and sometimes you feel you've read just about all there is to say. In this case, listening to a professional who isn't a major, known director gives a much different and valuable approach to filmmaking that you wouldn't normally get from a book written by your favorite director. Some books talk about how to get the great shots and cast the right mood but this book forces you to ask yourself how much will the shot really cost and can I do it a better way with a small budget. Sometimes, that's just as important.

Highly informative - and quite amusing! A must for anyone involved in any aspect of making films. Also a truly enjoyable read for the layman. Broken down into short, easily understood topics - each shedding light on a separate aspect of movie-making.
Tom Reilly is a graduate of Harvard College. Upon graduation he applied for one of the Directors Guild of America's highly coveted trainee positions. He succeeded in securing one, fulfilling his desire for a career in which he would not have to wear a tie to work!
Glad he did. This book is just great!

About the Author

Nancy H. Ramage is the Dana Professor of the Humanities and Arts Emerita at Ithaca College, where she was department chair for eleven years, and where she won the Excellence in Teaching Award. She was a Visiting Fellow at Clare Hall, Cambridge University, and is now a life member of that college. An art historian who specializes in Roman art, she also writes and lectures on the history of collecting, and on the influence of the Romans on 18th and 19th century decorative arts. She was an academic trustee of the Archaeological Institute of America, and was head of their lecture program for several years. She serves on the governing board of the Wedgwood International Seminar, and on the Council of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University, where she received her doctoral degree. Professor Ramage has worked at the Archaeological Excavations at Sardis, Turkey, for many years, and has written about the sculpture and pottery from that site. Among her numerous honors and awards, she has been a Getty Museum scholar, a recipient of several grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, London.

Andrew Ramage is professor emeritus of the History of Art and Archaeology at Cornell University, where he was previously Director of the Archaeology Program and Chair of the Department. He previously taught at the University of Michigan and the University of Massachusetts in Boston. At Harvard University, where he earned his doctorate, he was keeper of the coins at the Fogg Art Museum. He is Associate Director of the Harvard/Cornell Archaeological Exploration of Sardis, in Turkey, and is writing a book about the houses and workshops of the early Lydians who lived there. He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, and a life member of Clare Hall, Cambridge University. The Ramages have written several books together; they have six granddaughters.

The book's key concept would be "a unity of style." By this, Nietzsche seems to mean a power to have "life in lavish perfection before our eyes," a power wherein our desire for "freedom, beauty, and greatness" and our "drive toward truth" are one (p. 33). A culture is healthy when it has such unity of style. In such a culture, philosophy exists in its fullest right, being engaged fully by its members. When it is sick, philosphy is deemed dangerous and philosophers exiles. Or, as Nietzsche says: "During such times philosophy remains the learned monologue of the lonely stroller, the accidental loot of the individual, the secret skeleton in the closet, or the harmless chatter between senile academics and children" (p. 37).

How such unity can be achieved in a philosopher is illustrated by Niezsche in philosophers of 'young' Greece, that is, before Plato. So in Thales ("water is the origin of all things"), we see 1) urges of the religious in his wanting to settle the primal origin of everything, 2) a natural scientist at work, putting his proposition in a language free from image or fable, and 3) a philosopher, in his "metaphysical conviction," or presenting his fundamental concept ("unity" of all things) clothed in a hypothesis ("water" as the source of that unity). In the case of Thales, we may say the unity is two-fold: 1) as to the relation between man and nature. Before Thales, Greeks thought nothing of nature, seeing it as mere semblance, and putting all their faith in men and Gods. It is with Thales that they started to believe in nature as a fundamental part of life, 2) as to varying ways of knowing. Nietzsche notes: "When Thales says, "all is water," man is stung up out of the wormlike probings and creepings-about of his separate sciences. He intuits the ultimate resolution of all things and overcomes, by means of such intuition, the vulgar restrictions of the lower leves of knowledge" (p. 44).

The book is from Nietzsche's early period, written at about the same time as The Birth of Tragedy. Although a very small book, with just over 100 pages, it contains many seeds for such essential Nietzschean concerns and themes as the relation between art, philosophy and life, the role of education in culture, virtues of slow reading, or "how one becomes what one is." Widely neglected, but what Walter Kaufmann said of Beyond Good and Evil would be equally applied to this book. You will encounter "hundreds of doors it opens for the mind, revealing new vistas, problems, and relationships."
