Beyond the fable, Lencioni presents a practical framework and actionable tools for identifying, hiring, and developing ideal team players.  Whether you’re a leader trying to create a culture around teamwork, a staffing professional looking to hire real team players, or a team player wanting to improve yourself, this book will prove to be as useful as it is compelling.

From the Inside Flap

"You guys really dropped the ball on the teamwork project."

They didn't say anything, so Jeff continued, focusing on Bobby. "You said it wasn't just posters and t-shirts, but what else was it?" Before they could answer, he went on. "Because you don't seem to know what you mean when you talk about team players."

"We didn't say—" Clare wanted to explain, but Jeff wouldn't let her.

"Oh wait. I forgot." Jeff was being sarcastic, but not rude. "You do have one clear definition. A person can't be a jackass."

They laughed, but in a guilty sort of way.

In his classic best-selling book, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, Patrick Lencioni laid out a groundbreaking, new approach for attacking the dangerous group behaviors that destroy teamwork. Here, he turns his focus to the individual member of a team, revealing the three indispensable virtues that make some people better team players than others.

Lencioni's latest page-turning fable is the story of a leader desperate to save his company by cracking the code on the virtues that define a true team player. Jeff Shanley takes over his family's locally revered construction firm and realizes that the only way to deliver on the two biggest projects in the company's history is to rapidly build a culture of hiring and development around those virtues. To do that, he'll have to confront and risk losing talented employees who don't know how to work on a team, and convince his fiery VP of operations not to lower the company's hiring standards in the face of short-term business pressure.

Beyond the fable, Lencioni presents a powerful framework and easy-to-use tools for identifying, hiring, and developing ideal team players in any kind of organization.Whether you're a leader striving to create a culture of teamwork, a human resources professional looking to hire real team players, or an employee wanting to make yourself an invaluable team member, The Ideal Team Player will prove

A Secular Business Book That Has Obvious Implications for Church Ministry Too
By George P. Wood
Effective organizations—whether they’re multinational corporations, professional sports franchises, or local churches—practice teamwork. When people work together on a common goal, they achieve more than they could do individually and experience a measure of personal satisfaction. When people work against one another, however, the result is organizational ineffectiveness and personal frustration.

In his 2002 bestseller, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, Patrick Lencioni outlined five ways teamwork goes awry: absence of trust, fear of conflict, lack of commitment, avoidance of accountability, and inattention to results. While that book identified the interpersonal dynamics of effective teams, it did not identify the personal qualities of effective team members. Lencioni’s new book, The Ideal Team Member, picks up where Five Dysfunctions left off and outlines three essential “virtues”: An ideal team member is humble, hungry, and smart.

Humility comes first because it is “the single greatest and most indispensable attribute of being a team player.” Humble team players are not “overtly arrogant,” of course, but they do not “lack self-confidence” either. Rather, quoting C. S. Lewis, Lencioni writes, “Humility isn’t thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less.” Humility makes collective action possible. Without it, teams don’t work effectively, because each member is either out for themselves ( due to overt arrogance) or unable to propose solutions (because of lack of self-confidence).

“Hungry people are always looking for more,” writes Lencioni. They are “self-motivated and diligent.” For a team to work effectively, each team member must proactively contribute to the overall effort. No slackers are allowed.

Smart doesn’t pertain to “intellectual capacity,” though it’s similar to emotional intelligence. Lencioni defines it as “a person’s common sense about people…the ability to be interpersonally appropriate and aware.” Ideal team members are people-smart.

After defining these three virtues, Lencioni outlines why and how they must work together. “If even one is missing in a team member, teamwork becomes significantly more difficult and sometimes not possible.” A team member who is only humble and hungry, for example, becomes an “accidental mess-maker” because they are constantly—albeit unintentionally—stepping on others’ toes. One who is only humble and smart is a “lovable slacker,” liked by all, but only willing to exert minimum necessary effort. Someone who is only hungry and smart is a “skillful politician,” which Lencioni describes as being “cleverly ambitious and willing to work extremely hard, but only in as much as it will benefit them personally.”

Although Lencioni wrote The Ideal Team Member for the secular business world, my description of its contents should convince ministers that it has application to the work of local churches as well. (Indeed, Lencioni—a devout Catholic—notes that Jesus Christ is the “most compelling example of humility in the history of mankind.”) The humble-hungry-smart model gives senior pastors and ministers who lead volunteers valuable insights into who to hire, how to assess their performance, what can be done to develop them when they lack one or more of the virtues, and how to embed those virtues in a church’s organizational culture. Consequently, I highly recommend this book to ministers and ministry leaders.

One final note: As with The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, The Ideal Team Player begins with what Lencioni calls “a leadership fable.” He tells the story of the CEO of a family-owned building company who discovers these three virtues in the course of taking over the reins of the company from his uncle. Only after telling the fable does Lencioni describe the humble-hungry-smart model in propositional terms. This narrative way of approaching the subject shows before it tells. This makes Lencioni’s points concrete and easy to understand. The show-then-tell approach is also, it seems to me, a great way to preach…though that is a subject for another time.

No Jackasses Allowed
By John W. Pearson
If I were still a CEO, here's The ONE Thing: The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results I would do this week:

STEP 1. Order four copies of Patrick Lencioni's new book, The Ideal Team Player.

STEP 2. Hand-deliver the book, along with a Starbucks card, to each of my direct reports, with this assignment: "Invest up to four hours at Starbucks this week—and read this important book. It's likely the most team-transforming exercise we’ll do together this year."

STEP 3. Schedule a half-day off-site team meeting (for next week) to discuss "How to Recognize and Cultivate the Three Essential Virtues” (the book’s sub-title).

STEP 4. Facilitate the senior team meeting (or invite a facilitator to do the honors) and get buy-in and commitment (a la Lencioni's pyramid in The Advantage: Why Organizational Health Trumps Everything Else In Business). Assign next steps.
[...]

STEP 5. Step back and watch your culture transform as you articulate three virtues: Humble, Hungry, and People Smart.

Wow! Patrick Lencioni has done it again! This is one powerful book--and maybe his funniest. In his classic "leadership fable" format (example: Death by Meeting: A Leadership Fable...About Solving the Most Painful Problem in Business), Lencioni delivers a page-turning business story. New CEO. Two direct reports. Massive dysfunction. New hires needed yesterday. (Sound familiar?)
[...]
But there's another problem: the top three leaders cannot define the "ideal team player” qualities. (Can you?) Half of the people they hire either quit or are terminated. Finally…finally, they agree on one virtue:

"Maybe our new slogan should be
'no jackasses allowed.'
That would make a great poster."

So, in search of more acceptable lingo and meaning, the leadership triad lands on Humble, Hungry, and Smart. Lencioni defines these virtues in the final 60 pages (The Model and application), worth the price of the book.

HUMBLE: "Great team players lack excessive ego or concerns about status." He adds, "Humility is the single greatest and most indispensable attribute of being a team player."

HUNGRY: "Hungry people almost never have to be pushed by a manager to work harder because they are self-motivated and diligent."

SMART: "Smart simply refers to a person's common sense about people."

Caution #1: What if you settle for just one out of three? Or, if you're fortunate, two out of three virtues? After all, no one's perfect.

Lencioni: "What makes humble, hungry, and smart powerful and unique is not the individual attributes themselves, but rather the required combination of all three."

His memorable labels for the "one out of three" prospects are caution enough:
--Humble Only: The Pawn
--Hungry Only: The Bulldozer
--Smart Only: The Charmer

What About 2 Out of 3?

“The next three categories that we'll explore represent people who are more difficult to identify because the strengths associated with them often camouflage their weaknesses.

“Team members who fit into these categories lack only one of the three traits and thus have a little higher likelihood of overcoming their challenges and becoming ideal team players. Still, lacking even one in a serious way can impede the team building process.”

Caution #2: Don’t use the following labels at work—but they are perfect descriptors for your “2 out of 3” team members:

--Hungry and Humble, but Not Smart: The Accidental Mess-Maker
--Humble and Smart, but Not Hungry: The Lovable Slacker
--Hungry and Smart, but Not Humble: The Skillful Politician

Watch out for the banana peel when you’re interviewing a candidate without humility. "Unfortunately, because they are so smart, Skillful Politicians are very adept at portraying themselves at being humble, making it hard for leaders to identify them and address their destructive behaviors."

Lencioni urges: Don't hire unless you and your team members can positively affirm a three-for-three person. I know. It's not easy, but read the book, and you'll be absolutely convinced.

Lencioni packs the last 60 pages with highly practical insights, warnings, and next steps. He lists very practical ways to assess your current team members and what to do with the 0-for-3, 1-for-3, and 2-for-3 people already on your team. He gives solutions, including a helpful self-assessment with 18 questions.

See you at Starbucks!

P.S. By the way, Andrew Murray’s insights in Humility will whack you between your selfies (in just 59 pages): “Humility is the only soil in which the graces root; the lack of humility is the sufficient explanation of every defect and failure.”

What Makes a Good Team Player? reviewed by Bill Pence of CoramDeotheBlog.com
By Bill Pence
My favorite "business" book is The Five Dysfunctions of a Team by Patrick Lencioni and a close second is his The Advantage. I put business in quotes because I have found the principles from Five Dysfunctions to be helpful on any team, be it in business, sports, a nonprofit or ministry. This new book picks up where The Five Dysfunctions left off.
Lencioni states that if someone were to ask him to make a list of the most valuable qualities a person should develop in order to thrive in the world of work—and for that matter, life—he would put being a team player at the top. In The Five Dysfunctions he explained that real teamwork requires tangible, specific behaviors: vulnerability-based trust, healthy conflict, active commitment, peer-to-peer accountability, and a focus on results. Here indicates that the three underlying virtues that enable them to be ideal team players are that they are humble, hungry, and smart.

He states that when a team member lacks one or more of these three virtues, the process of building a cohesive team is much more difficult than it should be, and in some cases, impossible. He writes that leaders who can identify, hire, and cultivate employees who are humble, hungry, and smart will have a serious advantage over those who cannot.

He states that the purpose of the book is to help the reader understand how the elusive combination of these three simple attributes can accelerate the process of making teamwork a reality in your organization or in your life so you can more effectively achieve the extraordinary benefits that it brings.

As is his usual approach (The Advantage was the exception), Lencioni illustrates his points in a leadership fable and then wraps up his points in a model at the end of the book. In this fable, we meet Jeff Shanley who lives and works in the Silicon Valley. After a few jobs in high-tech marketing, at age thirty-five he cofounded a technology start-up. Two years later, he was fortunate enough to get demoted when the board of directors hired what they called a grown-up CEO. During the next four years, that CEO, Kathryn Petersen, taught Jeff more about leadership, teamwork, and business than he could have learned in a decade of business school. When Kathryn retired, Jeff left the company and spent the next few years working at a small consulting firm in Half Moon Bay, over the hills from the Silicon Valley. As the book opens he is ready for a change. But it turns out to be a change that he didn’t see coming.

Jeff receives a phone call from his Uncle Bob, who owns Valley Builders, a successful building contractor in Napa Valley. Eventually, due to his uncle’s health problems, Jeff will take over the company from his uncle at a critical time for the organization, a time of both challenges and opportunities. Valley Builders has just landed two large projects. The company has never had two major projects like this at the same time, both of which are as big as they’ve ever done. They will need to add a net sixty people in the next two months, with five critical hires that will need to be made first – a project manager, three foremen, and a senior engineer. On top of that, they will need about a half dozen supervisors and about fifty contractors of all kinds.

Jeff and his leadership team at Valley Builders will need to look at their hiring process to assure that they hire true team players, the kind of person who can easily build trust, engage in healthy conflict, make real commitments, hold people accountable, and focus on the team's results. The life of their company will depend on it.

After the fable, the author covers the ideal team player model, what it means, where it comes from, and how it can be put to practical use. He states that “For organizations seriously committed to making teamwork a cultural reality, I'm convinced that “the right people” are the ones who have those three virtues in common—humility, hunger, and people smarts.” Included in this section is a helpful Manager Assessment. He also discusses peer evaluations versus peer discussion, stating that he believes “the most powerful activity that occurs around any assessment is peer discussion.”

I found his section connecting The Ideal Team Player Model with The Five Dysfunctions of A Team to be particularly helpful. He states that the ideal team player is all about the makeup of individual team members, while the five dysfunctions are about the dynamics of teams getting things done.

He ends the book by stating that over the past twenty years, it has become apparent to him that humility, hunger, and people smarts have relevance outside of the workplace, and that apart from the other two virtues, humility stands alone.

There is some profanity included in the leadership fable portion of the book. I found it of interest that two of the three virtues incIuded here were included in Brad Lomenick’s excellent 2015 book H3 Leadership: Be Humble. Stay Hungry. Always Hustle.

Lencioni points the reader to his website for additional resources about The Ideal Team Player.

My Wife Likes To Watch (Cuckquean Couples) (The Cuckquean Tales Book 3), by Deliah Dell

My hot and famous husband has no problem finding other women to sleep with, and I find it very arousing when he does. That's because I'm a cuckquean. I enjoy watching him flirt with them and then seduce them right in front of me. And when he bangs them hard and without protection, I like to be right there and assist him.

But the young and voluptuous Riley is almost my polar opposite, so why does it turn me on so much when my husband takes her to a hotel?

Spilt Milk, by Chico Buarque

From world-renowned Brazilian writer Chico Buarque comes a stylish, imaginative tale of love, loss, and longing, played out across multiple generations of one Brazilian family. At once jubilant and painfully nostalgic, playful and devastatingly urgent, Spilt Milk cements Chico Buarque’s reputation as a masterful storyteller.

As Eulálio Assumpção lies dying in a Brazilian public hospital, his daughter and the attending nurses are treated—whether they like it or not—to his last, rambling monologue. Ribald, hectoring, and occasionally delusional, Eulálio reflects on his past, present, and future—on his privileged, plantation-owning family; his father’s philandering with beautiful French whores; his own half-hearted career as a weapons dealer; the eventual decline of the family fortune; and his passionate courtship of the wife who would later abandon him. As Eulálio wanders the sinuous twists and turns of his own fragmented memories, Buarque conjures up a brilliantly evocative portrait of a man’s life and love, set in the broad sweep of vivid Brazilian history.

A life in recollection
By TChris
Spilt Milk begins with the rambling narrative of a hospital patient, Eulálio Assumpção, speaking to a girlfriend who, it soon becomes clear, is present only in his imagination. Assumpção is old -- he says his life has become "unbearably long, like a fraying thread" -- although whether he is actually one hundred years old, as he sometimes believes, is not entirely clear. Assumpção's connection to reality is tenuous. At times he believes his long-dead parents will be coming to rescue him from captivity. Other times he believes his daughter is arranging his discharge. Some days he is convinced he will not survive the night and asks for a priest to perform the last rites; other days he thinks he is being kidnapped.

Assumpção lives in his memories but his memories are indistinguishable from his dreams. "Memory is truly a pandemonium," he says, yet by rummaging around all sorts of things can be found. His memories resist chronology or any other order; they are called to mind by free-association. Whether those memories are reliable is another question. Assumpção recognizes that his memories have increasingly become memories of memories, copies that degrade each time they are reproduced. The reader is left to sort out truth from falsity in the confusion that is Assumpção's life in recollection.

With a minimum of well chosen words, Chico Buarque sketches Assumpção's long life and the colorful lives that surrounded him: the father ("the most influential politician in the old Republic") who took him whoring and introduced him to cocaine while he was still a child; the mother who wears tragedy well; the relatives who are misfits, criminals, and victims; the wife who taught him the true meaning of desire; the daughter whose husband leaves her during her pregnancy; the great-grandson born in prison, or perhaps in an army hospital, depending on how Assumpção remembers the story. Of course, whether we should accept these characters at face value is doubtful. Does Assumpção really have a great-great-grandson named (as are all his male descendants) Eulálio, "already a strapping young man of my size," who set fire to his school and stole his wife's jewelry from Assumpção's home so he could buy the latest mobile phones and phosphorescent tennis shoes? Not knowing quite what to make of Assumpção's stories -- no matter how confidently Assumpção tells them -- is part of the novel's appeal.

Assumpção's strongest memories are of his wife Matilde, his first and irreplaceable love, yet even here his account of their relationship is confusing and marked by contradiction. Assumpção was a jealous husband; whether that jealousy was founded is, like so much else in this novel, never clear. Assumpção believes Matilde abandoned him, although the timing and circumstances of that abandonment change each time Assumpção recalls them, as does Matilde's eventual fate. What shines through as trustworthy are elemental emotions: Assumpção's desire for Matilde and his despair at her loss. His life was full when they were together. After she left, the story of his life "would consist of many pages and little ink" -- empty pages. Perhaps his malleable memories of his daughter and of the offspring of his offspring are just an old man's last attempt to put words on the page.

Buarque's evocative prose captures the Copacabana of Assumpção's youth like sepia-tinted photographs. Still, it is the poignancy of Assumpção's life -- a long transition from privilege to poverty and perhaps, in the end, a life not entirely lived -- and the stark contrast of his memories of Matilde that make Spilt Milk memorable. If I could, I would give Spilt Milk 4 1/2 stars.

The lost art of the monologue - rediscovered!
By Grady Harp
Chico Buarque is a wordsmith of the first order. In this his fourth novel (translated form the original Portuguese by Alison Entrekin) he reveals in pleasing himself and his reader with a sad love story that while it is as Brazilian in essence as anything written it is also a tlae that crosses all country lines, so appealing is his ability to entertain and capture the imagination.

Eulálio d'Assumpção is on his deathbed. Born a century ago into Brazilian aristocracy, he has watched his world change, or crumble, and still he lingers. "As the future narrows, younger people have to pile up any which way in some corner of my mind. For the past, however, I have an increasingly spacious drawing room." The marvel of Buarque's wirting is how he divides the past form the present without loosening the ties that bind them together. He juggles memory and experience and often makes us guess which is real.

Eulálio has seen a lot of life, starting with the death of his politically important father being gunned down either by political opponents or the husband of a woman he seduced. It's no coincidence that Eulálio's life echoes, to an extent, that of his country, for Buarque has long put politics at the center of his art. A well-known musician and playwright, he was imprisoned in the late 1960s by Brazil's ruling dictatorship and remained an outspoken critic of the regime after his release. That's because Eulálio is adrift, not just within his life but also in his memories, which shift and overlap, repeating throughout the novel like the choruses of a song. Warehoused in a derelict hospital, he moves back and forth between past and present, mesmerizing us with characters and incidents, blurring the boundaries between what he imagines and what he recalls. And at the heart of everything is his wife Matilde, with whom he fell in love at his father's funeral, a dark-skinned choir girl who may or may not be the daughter of another official.

SPILT MILK is a series of connected monologues, each chapter written as a single paragraph to highlight how each incident or memory bleeds into the next. And in the final analysis of the work, though we are completely in love with Eulálio's story, the pertinent aspects of the message are about societal class given the knowledge of Brazil's scourge of racism and slavery, and it is this aspect of the love between Eulálio and Matilde that marks the serious unerpeinning of Buarque's message: even the most prominent among us fade into the vapor of history, becoming footnotes, dead-end streets. The same is true of our inner lives, which disappear as we do, all our loss and love and longing little more than, yes, spilt milk. And yet, the novel insists, this is neither good nor bad, just inevitable; hence, the title, with its implication that nothing is worth crying over. As Eulálio puts it, remembering the funeral of his grandson or great-grandson (he can no longer distinguish between them): "The gravediggers were in a bad mood, and when the coffin hit the bottom of the grave with a heavy thud, the muffled sound struck me as the end of the Assumpção line. It was fine by me; I'd had enough."

At novel's end it seems that Buarque is stating that all of life is an illusion and those thing we treasure the most probably matter the least. This novel may be short in length (It can comfortably be read in an evening) but it is long on merit . Grady Harp, December 12

Spoilt milk

Memory is identity, and this is what ought to have guided Buarque's Spilt Milk. We are the narrative we have constructed out of our past, and when that narrative begins to unravel, there can be but little left. So when Assumpçao's memories begin to dissolve and merge into the present as he lies, aged one hundred, on a hospital bed, we know he must be close to the end. Buarque manages to hold our attention for a full novel's worth of remembrances. Sweetly nostalgic yet sober-minded, Assumpçao's account takes us on a long, slow-motion slide from Copacabana villa to emergency room stretcher through the hovels of a Rio suburb. And as socio-historical sketch, this works. The narrator, the hero, is the scion of an aristocratic family from Brazil's imperial times, but through ill luck and pusillanimous children, he sees it all wasted and he descends to the level of the poor, coloured people he once patronised. Bit by bit, whether through political or personal circumstance, he loses it all until all he has left is his name.

As a private drama, however, this is less engaging. The problem is that the faltering mind of a dying man is a poor guide to constructing a cast of characters. Central to Assumpçao's memories are his wife Matilde, but such are his divagations that one is left unsure whether she left him, died young, or never existed. Indeed she might only be a fantasy born of that young nurse to whom he purports to be telling his life story. Rather than feeling touched, though, we are left bemused. The same goes of the relationship with the narrator's son, or is it his grandson, or great grandson and after all, do we care? When memories go, everything goes: the problem is that it is difficult to build a sufficiently engaging novel around that premise.

Constantinople and its Hinterland: Papers from the Twenty-Seventh Spring Symposium of Byzantine Studies, Oxford, April 1993 (Publications o

From its foundation, the city of Constantinople dominated the Byzantine world. It was the seat of the emperor, the centre of government and church, the focus of commerce and culture, by far the greatest urban centre; its needs in terms of supplies and defense imposed their own logic on the development of the empire. Byzantine Constantinople has traditionally been treated in terms of the walled city and its immediate suburbs. In this volume, containing 25 papers delivered at the 27th Spring Symposium of Byzantine Studies held at Oxford in 1993, the perspective has been enlarged to encompass a wider geographical setting, that of the city’s European and Asiatic hinterland. Within this framework a variety of interconnected topics have been addressed, ranging from the bare necessities of life and defence to manufacture and export, communications between the capital and its hinterland, culture and artistic manifestations and the role of the sacred.

This book provides a complete resource for undergraduate and postgraduate students of intellectual property law. The first text of its kind in the field, it combines extracts from major cases and secondary materials with critical commentary from experienced teachers in the field.

The book deals with all areas of intellectual property law in the UK: copyright, trade marks and passing off, confidential information, industrial designs, patent, procedure and enforcement. Intellectual Property Law: Text, Cases and Materials aims to provide a 'one-stop resource' on intellectual property and largely achieves this aim. It is both thought-provoking and accessible which encourages the reader to undertake further reading by, perhaps, delving deeper into the extracts or considering the further reading. By Aliah
A brilliant book for even someone new to Law. It exceeded expectations. I use it more than the core textbook/reading for my LLM. I am completely new to Law, and studying the LLM from the perspective of IP in technology. However, the detail of a variety of cases for each topic, the thought provoking analysis offered about each case, and the concise but very clear delivery of the subject matter covering all the essential topics; it enables even a novice to pick up and learn about IP Law at a high level.

Better still - and a big deciding factor - is that it is available as an e-book. Partly because I have a chronic condition with my wrist, and is difficult to work with books and conventionally type; but has transformed my studies as a working professional who needs to read when time permits through the day, out and about. I would not have been as clued up when responding to questions and assignments, having saved me the time, and moreover the convenient ability to make reference to excerpts without having to type them up.

Having just started studying the LLM and part time while working at that, this is quite a 'life saver'.

I'd recommend particularly the e-book version given the size of these law books!

I wish some of the other key books existed in the e-book format...

By Pei San Lin
Cases cited was quite precise but can be very confusing. It did not states the distinction between cases well. At least, not critically assessed. A bit disappointed as it's not as 'current' as the law has developed.

Algorithmic Architecture, by Kostas Terzidis

Why does the word design owe its origin to Latin and not Greek roots? Where do the limits of the human mind lie? How does ambiguity enter the deterministic world of computation? Who was Parmenides and why is his philosophy still puzzling today? This unique volume challenges the reader to tackle all these complex questions and more.

Algorithmic Architecture is not a typical theory-based architectural book; it is not a computer programming or language tutorial book either. It contains a series of provocative design projects, and yet it is not just a design or graphic art book per se. Following the tradition of architecture as a conglomeration of various design fields - engineering, theory, art, and recently, computation - the challenge of this book is to present a concept that, like architecture, is a unifying theme for many diverse disciplines. An algorithm is not only a step-by-step problem-solving procedure, a series of lines of computer codes or a mechanistic linguistic expression, but is also an ontological construct with deep philosophical, social, design, and artistic repercussions. Consequently, this book presents many, various and often seemingly disparate points of view that lead to the establishment of one common theme; algorithmic architecture.

Interesting cross-disciplinary book not just for architects
By calvinnme
This is a very interesting book on the use of algorithms to come up with interesting solutions to architectural design problems. It is a sort of cross between artificial intelligence, computer science, computer graphics, and, of course, architecture that uses the language of algorithm implementation to get its point across of all of these disciplines intersecting. The first three chapters are introductory in nature and focus on the philosophy of combining the various disciplines. The fourth chapter is where the author gets down to business and begins to discuss specific algorithms. Boolean operations, stochastic search, fractals, cellular automata, and morphing are all shown in algorithmic form and discussed within the context of solving architectural design problems. For each algorithm the author gives code, explanations, and examples. Chapters five and six provide illustrations of types of architectural design that use algorithms. Chapter five presents three projects: a parasite structure, a morphed high-rise, and a Boolean concert hall. Chapter six shows how intricate structures can emerge from simple algorithms. Three projects are presented in this chapter too: a repetitive pattern for a house of worship, a stochastic-based residential high-rise, and a library. Chapter seven acts as a kind of summary of ideas presented in the book. I am involved in computer graphic programming, not architecture, and I still found lots of ideas in this very fascinating and well-illustrated book. This would be interesting reading for people involved in the design of virtual worlds too.

Including MEL scripts
By Ernst
This book starts by explaining the nature of algorithmic architecture. Next to the interesting theories and viewpoints it gives short MEL-scripts. These scripts are the code behind the amazing algorithmic shapes and spaces. I found these MEL scripts very useful and by studying the scripts this book will give you the key to create your own algorithm. I was able to make simple scripts myself, but these nice examples really improved my skills and gave me new ideas of how to use MEL (within maya).

interesting
By Pedro Barran
This is a good book for architecture students. There you 'll find an introduction to the use of scripting in architectural design, algorithms, students projects and even MEL code.
Nevertheless I think the first half of the book is forgettable, there the author tries to come up with a BIG theory for design, and falls short.
