This was pretty much the only book we used while traveling in the Perigord.
Frankly---it was MORE than enough. It covered the region splendidly.
Additionally, the writing style was very enjoyable...which we do enjoy in a travel book.
Nice pictures without being overdone.

Dordogne one-book guide

This guidebook has been very helpful in planning a trip to the Dordogne--history, accommodations, sites. The fine photographs help visualize the places. The print is a little small but this is a small quibble for an excellent guidebook. This is the only book you will need.

An Epic Adventure

Wow! This book covers more ground in a mere 500 pages than I could ever have imagined before reading it. The adventures of Albion Hamlin are postively Odyssean. Our protagonist is at various times a farmer, a lawyer, a prisoner, a soldier, and a slave. And the action takes us from New England to Haiti, France, and North Africa. Somehow, in the end, it all makes complete sense. The successful integration of so many stories and characters is remarkable.
Albion's companion, King Dick, is especially interesting, a more heroic though still light-hearted incarnation of the Cap Huff character from the Arundel series, always to the rescue. And the historical characters, dozens of them, are captivating (sometimes quite literally). Unlike the Odyssey, there are no fantastic multi-headed homicidal creatures to fend off, but some of the humans are reasonable substitutes.
If I had to cite a shortcoming, it would be that here and there Roberts strains plausibility almost to the breaking point, most notably in the rapidity with which Lydia Bailey and Albion Hamlin fall in love. Ironically, it is the title character, Lydia, who is perhaps the most superficial of all the personalities who make appearances in this novel. But this is a minor flaw that is more than compensated for by extraordinary character development elsewhere.
In the final analysis, this is a great, grand book that has a lot to say about human nature, about war, about politics, and about humanity. It gets better with every page and has the power to capture the reader and whisk him away, never to return.
Lydia Bailey earns my highest recommendation for those lucky readers who can occasionally suspend disbelief. Others will find it enjoyable, too.

Great historical adventure!

Told in the first person, Kenneth Roberts spins a wonderful tale spanning New England, Haiti and Tripoli during a very turbulent and formative time in the history of the US. Lessons to be learned for today as well. I think this is his best work.

Novel based on C.L.R. James historical view

I'm particularly fond of this novel as it was the cause of my being suspended from high school ca. 1960... (My history teacher declaimed that "the United States is the only country in the world that has never broken a treaty!" Having just finished this book, I asked, "What about the French Spoliation Claims?" and was promptly sent home.) The depiction of the Haitian revolution and its main characters -- Dessalines, Christophe, Toussaint -- is based on a thorough understanding of C.L.R. James' analysis, The Black Jacobins, i.e. it is a very progressive, somewhat left-wing view. I think that the even-handedness of Roberts' evaluation of the characters -- that "goodness" and "badness" are not confined to one "race" or another -- is admirable. Also, for people who want to understand some of the roots of Haiti's historical and current devastated conditions, this is an excellent way to connect.

Matthew Porter is an Englishman abroad. Originally from a tiny village in the south of England he now reside across the pond in the lovely city of Seattle. A children's book illustrator and author his stories and imagery present the perfect balance of nostalgia with modern elegance. Matthew's illustrations are hand drawn and painted on wood. Then lightly sanded so some of the grain shows through. This gives them a worn folk art aesthetic. A Flamboyance of Flamingos!? really!

What a delightful board book for the child in your life. We bought this for our 1 yr old, but the 3 1/2 year old loves it too. AND the parents learned something new! Who knew it was a "flamboyance of flamingos"? Very creative with endearing illustrations.

An honest review

I bought this book because of the glowing reviews. It took me all of an hour to read it from beginning to end and I was a bit disappointed in the content. Upon going back to look at the reviewers' histories I noticed something rather disturbing to me... One in particular posted 19 books reviews today, 17 yesterday, so on and so forth. Sadly enough, a majority of the reviewers for this book are like that.
My opinion is that this is nowhere near a 5-star book. Poor editing, (improper tenses, sentences routinely missing prepositions, articles, conjunctions etc.,) alone negate a 5-star rating.
In my opinion this is a very basic introduction into lucid dreaming. Only two methods of induction are covered: MILD and WILD, neither of which are advanced techniques. I didn't hate the book, all the information was useful and correct, from what I know about the subject. There just isn't enough of it and it isn't written well. This is basically a beginner's guide without discussing reality checks and dream signs.

I've had an interest in lucid dreams for a while. Controlling dreams has been a hot topic of study for a long time and probably always will! This book added to my knowledge about it in simple, intriguing terms. I like to read this in the morning while a dream is still fresh! I'd like to thank the author for an educational and educating read.

Lal Zimman is a Visiting Assistant Professor at Reed College. His research, which brings together ethnographic, sociophonetic, and discourse analytic frameworks, deals with the relationship between gender, sexuality, and embodiment in the linguistic practices of transgender and LGBQ communities.

Jenny L. Davis is a Lyman T. Johnson Post-doctoral Fellow in Linguistics at the University of Kentucky. Her research analyzes the intersections of language, ethnicity, and identity, with foci on indigenous language use and the sociocultural dynamics of language revitalization.

Social commentary and metaphor

Like all Forster's novels, the plot of 'The Longest Journey' is secondary to the underlying themes - the new 'mechanical' society that Forster hated, being true to yourself and class structure. It's not the kind of book you pick up in an airport - it's thought provoking and wonderfully written.

The Best Loved though Not The Best

Edward Morgan Forster expressed his special partiality for this particular book regretting that it was never as popular as "The Room with a View". It seems, however, that his readers knew better choosing either the lighter Italian novels or later works such as "Howards End" or "A Passage to India".
Forster's partiality is comprehensible when we try to read the book through his biography. On the one hand he is able to reveal here his long-term infatuation with a fellow student and go back to his university adventures. On the other hand he uses his craft to draw for himself a life he would have had he decided to become straight. The image is far from pleasant - becoming straight means being imprisoned in a hapless marriage for which the hero has to pay with his academic career. It is an unhappy life which ends in an accidental death.
This is an important novel in Forster's oeuvre and if you were attracted by others you should by all means proceed to "The Longest Journey". Still, a modern reader will gasp many a time while reading the novel. It wouldn't be fair to reveal too much but just let me draw your attention to one fact. Forster apparently finds dealing with his cast of characters a bit too much so they disappear one by one... as a result of sudden deaths. When Gerald is "broken" on a football pitch you gasp, but when you have drowning, heart attack, deathly cold and train accident and so on you can't help smiling.

Sometimes stuffy, but great characters and social commentary

The Longest Journey can be difficult to get into, but is worth the effort. Set at the end of the Victorian period in England, it follows the character of Rickie Elliot from his Cambridge days through various attempts to find happiness and fulfillment in life. It helps to know a little about British society to fully understand each character's actions. The fascinating thing about the novel is that there isn't a single character that you can pinpoint as good or bad -- like real people, the characters lie and put on false fronts. It's fun to discover just who Rickie's friends and relatives really are. Characters like Agnes, who Rickie loves, and Mrs. Failing, his relative, make some great points about women in society. Although this book is primarily a "novel of manners" like Jane Austen would write, there are several exciting plot twists, including a surprise ending. If you enjoy books by authors like Jane Austen and Thomas Hardy, try The Longest Journey.
