Basic to the point of unusable

I was curious enough to buy this book but then I was forced to return it to Amazon. The thing is, IMHO, it says nothing about how to design better stories. The book consists of dozens of laundry lists of various genres, themes, plot twists, character traits etc etc. with little or no commentary on how to actually apply them. The idea behind this book, as I understand it, is to mix and match various ideas and premises or see if any of them inspire you enough to come up with a story around them. It's all right as a fun reference for what it costs, just don't expect miracles: you just can't throw a novel together by connecting the dots on these numerous lists.

Razor sharp thinking and powerful methods, but not for beginners

An excellent book with clear thinking, well communicated, but not for beginners. Coming to this book after reading, and trying to employ, several methods for evaluating and improving story structure, it's like a beacon in the fog.

For someone coming to it without a background of reading and practice in the field, I suspect it might seem overly simplistic and the methods hard to follow or stick to. It's only once you've learned the hard way that fuzziness in thinking about your story leads to fuzzy, muddled results that the true value of this book becomes apparent. I can say with confidence that if I'd found this book two years ago, I wouldn't have "got it" at all.

It doesn't distinguish between plot and structure as some do, rather it teats structure as an aspect of a plot, something it always exhibits in one form or another, a position which is hard to dispute.

It doesn't deal with every kind of plot. It isn't a method well suited to producing plots where the protagonist doesn't really have an arc. However, it's excellent for any kind of protagonist-centric story where you want a strong arc. Despite not being aimed primarily at literary fiction, it would be very useful to a literary fiction writer that appreciates structure. The language is quite different to some other books that categorize plots in a different way, but it turns out more useful than any system that says one label can describe a plot. For example, William Bernhardt says there are five kinds of plots. While his system of division isn't useless, it isn't powerful because it provides only limited, vague information about a plot. Kutzera's system says far more.

I found that many other books provided systems that seemed to make sense while you were reading, but when you tried to apply them, they were too vague to be effective. The brutal simplification this book encourages, and the clean-cut methods of doing it, are a great aid in per-planning a story so it really has strong bones, or evaluating why an existing story is weak.

With the tool-kit of concepts in this book, you can easily take stories apart and evaluate their strengths and weaknesses.

Another strength of this book is the order it suggests, the priority of working. By focussing on issues in the right order, the characteristics of the protagonist flow from the plot and reinforce it. This method is easy to apply, rather than trying to work out how to drape a plot onto a character concept, which is hard. The focus on essential parts of the story is better than simplistic advice like "write from the end backwards".

If only more screen-writers would pay attention to this book I think we'd be spared a huge number of dismal movies and lacklustre television.

This book is chock-full of plotting information!

With NaNoWriMo only a few days away, I needed a quick primer on plotting. I came across Dale's eBook "The Plot Machine", was intrigued by the title, browsed the first few pages, saw that it was reasonably priced and bought it, not knowing what to expect. I'm sure glad I took that chance. I read it cover-to-cover in one sitting, jotting down a ton of notes as I read. This book goes way beyond the basic three-act structure. It explains in detail how to fill all those spaces in-between the acts. Not only does Dale give you an extensive overview of story structure and design, but he also breaks the story down into it's most fundamental elements, giving a novice writer like myself the tools necessary to tackle the complex task of story-crafting. The deeper I got into his lessons, the more I started to understand the story I wanted to write. I will definitely be using this book as reference for NaNoWriMo (and beyond).

This provides a point of departure for more complex analytical topics. Discourse analysis is applied to show how different degrees of 'consensus' can be ascribed to the same group of scientists at a given moment in time through the application of standard interpretive techniques. Finally, discourse analysis is used to explore scientists' humour, a neglected topic that is shown to provide important insights into the normally hidden interpretive regularities which underlie the cultural diversity of science.

About the Author
Nigel Gilbert read for a first degree in Engineering, intending to go into the computer industry. However, he was lured into sociology and obtained his doctorate on the sociology of scientific knowledge from the University of Cambridge, under the supervision of Michael Mulkay. His research and teaching interests have reflected his continuing interest in both sociology and computer science (and engineering more widely). His main research interests are processual theories of social phenomena, the development of computational sociology and the methodology of computer simulation, especially agent-based modelling. He is Director of the Centre for Research in Social Simulation. He is also Director of the University's Institute of Advanced Studies and responsible for its development as a leading centre for intellectual interchange. He is the author or editor of several textbooks on sociological methods of research and statistics and editor of the Journal of Artificial Societies and Social Simulation.

About the Author
Darlene Ortiz is widely known as the first cover girl of rap. Her poses for such seminal Ice T albums as Rhyme Pays and Power made her a Hip Hop icon. She also starred in multiple music videos and modeled in dozens of magazines. She co-hosts a radio show with comedian Corey Holcomb that boasts thousand of listeners. Heidi Siegmund Cuda is an Emmy Award winning producer and the author of The Ice Opinion with Ice T, the first book of rap. She also wrote Got Your Back with Tupac’s bodyguard Frank Alexander; Sublime’s Brad Nowell: Crazy Fool (Portrait of a Punk); and Warped Book: Tales of Freedom and Psychotic Ambition, about the Vans Warped Tour. Cuda is a former investigative producer for Fox 11 News and former music critic and columnist for the Los Angeles Times. She now writes screenplays.

Book was ok. It doesn't really tell many compelling stories and Ms. Ortiz does not seem to want to reveal a lot of specific details. Overall, I wouldn't recommend unless you were really a fan of Ms. Ortiz.

Darlene's Kindness and Elegance

What i liked the most about the book is the Kindness and Class of Darlene. She had some hard time, yet through all her ordeal she maintained a noble attitude, never felt any resentment or bitterness against the man who basically turned his back on her and for no reasons. A Star like 'Ice T" most other women would sue him or take him to the cleaner. Darlene is elegance and class
The book was very well written. It was easy to read, understand, and felt like a conversation between 2 friends. The kindness that reflected did touch my heart. The book size and soft cover was light and easy to carry. I liked very much the large print; i could read without my glasses.

Heidi Cuda integrated all the characters in a smooth and kept the reader engaged at all times.

It was fascinating reading the story of a Star and how he got there.
