Erotically charged...AND an amazing plot...

All boxes are checked off and I was surprised how good this actually was! Found this new (to me) author when I received an email that it was on sale.Suspenseful borderline dark,erotic romance with non con ,"captive" elements ,mystery, intrigue and danger on the high seas...with well written with well developed characters(albeit maintaining an air of mystery with Haithen) ,what more could a girl like me ask for? And part two ready and waiting for me! I am rarely willing to jump outside the bounds of my KU membership,but this one I worth it ! Loved it and off to book 2 now.
Plus,I am happy to see that Amber has another title under KU and will move onto that after completing this series!Thanks Amber!

Mysteries here

Angelina carries lots of emotional damage and is unsure of her worth. She sees a magnetically handsome man at a coffee shop and is compelled to watch him. Eventually she takes a risky move to spend some time with him and it leads to many questions for both of them to get answers to. Like this very much, including some good laughs, but the writing needed some polish to be a five star.

Well Researched Exegetical Work

This is a treasure in itself. The serious reader will be able to learn a wealth of theological information that is easy to understand, in a readable format. The contents are well researched and well documented. This volume, like all the other NIGT Commentaries, engages the Biblical text at a scholarly level combining NT Greek exegesis and theological interpretation in their proper historical, linguistic, cultural, and textual context. The present volume is a detailed verse-by-verse commentary of the Greek and English text of the Pastoral epistles. It is useful for the scholar doing research, and also for the pastor doing sermon preparation. It is absolutely indispensable for the Bible student who is learning what the Bible really says. What I really like is the exegetical approach of the Greek text. The author also brilliantly engages the scholarly literature on the particular subject being discussed. Yes his approach is from an evangelical perspective (as it should be). Exegesis tries to bring to light the real meaning of the text and not the biased interpretative conventions of different denominations. I respect that. Thus I highly recommend this volume. The price is affordable, even though all books today are a bit too expensive. Nevertheless, it is a good investment and a perfect addition to the pastor's (or layman's) library.

The book opens with a foreword, a preface and bibliography. After the detailed textual and historical introduction it addresses the attestation of the early church and its relationship with the Acts of the Apostles and the other NT epistles. Afterwards, the author continues with a meticulous presentation of critical arguments concerning the authorship of these epistles. After presenting the absence of basic Pauline concepts and the relationship between Luke and Paul he examines the Lucan proposal and concludes that Paul is the author after all. Then, G. W. Knight III proceeds with his detailed, verse-by-verse exegetical commentary of the Pauline Epistles. Very good book.

Excellent technical commentary

This is probably the most helpful commentary that I have on the Pastoral Epistles. George Knight does an excellent job with the Pastoral Epistles explaining not only the meaning of the words, but the relationships between the words and ideas of the text. He deals with difficult passages fairly and draws from and footnotes many other helpful resources. While knowledge of Greek will enable one to get full benefit from this commentary, Knight explains concepts in enough detail for those who do not know Greek to benefit greatly as well.

Excellent resource

A volume every pastor should have on his shelf. Knight takes his cue from the Greek text and works through the major issues in each letter. A student of Pauline theology will often see this volume cited in footnotes and endnotes by other writers and scholars because of its importance and completeness. The text is explained in a way that will satisfy those who don't know Greek, but that will also delve deeper for those who are conversant with the original language. Highly recommended and worth the price.

I took this handy book to Canada recently and it was tremendously helpful. The rest of the world outside the U.S. uses the metric system so it functions as a useful guide. This book, whether in paper or electronic format, would be especially helpful to kids. The author has a great way of making the conversions easy to follow, even for those mathematically challenged like myself.

CCH the Authority on Tax

Tax documentation obviously has a limited shelf life as tax laws are constantly changing. CCH is the authority on tax and tax law and this book gives you a really good overview of common tax situations and how they are handled. The one key element missing in this book would be more in-depth information on how research tax issues. I've often said that taxes are like fingerprints, each situation is unique to the person and must be researched accordingly. If you're looking for a book to get you started in understanding common tax practices then I'd recommend it.

Don't buy the kindle edition!!!

I bought the kindle edition of this book, and it has been a complete waste of money. I needed this book for the end of chapter questions that are required homework for my tax class. Unfortunately, the questions are all jumbled up. Half of problem 52 will be in the middle of question 48. All the numbers that appear in lists, whether in the chapters or the questions are also out of order which makes this book worthless. All in all this shows a complete lack of quality control from the publisher.

Intimidating but comprehensive

This text was used for my Federal Taxation II course so we only used the later chapters. The text is intimidating and the way it is structured by paragraph number is confusing at first. But once you get used to it makes researching the right section simple. The examples given are very instructive and the text references the tax code often enough that if you need to find the actual IRS line you can use the text material to narrow an online search.

Great Liaden Adventure!

This a a great book -- another wonderful jaunt in the Liaden Universe. Er Thom yos'Galan, Clan Korval must get an heir, but before he can agree to the traditional contract-marriage, he has to settle some unfinished business with his former lover -- on Earth. It gets more complicated from there, however, as Anne Davis, it turns out, is the mother of his son, Shan! From that beginning we learn that Anne is involved in some earthshaking linguistics research -- research that threatens her life both on Terra and later on Liad. Throw into the mix Er Thom's mother (who doesn't want a Terran as a guest in the Clan house, let alone as the mother of her son's child) and Shan's extraordinary Healing ability and you get a very intriguing story!
However, the Liaden Universe cannot be read simply with an eye to the plot -- the customs of the Liadens, the intricacy of the manners and the interaction are amazing! Liad is so REAL one feels you should almost practice your bows if you ever should meet one!
It should also be noted that Local Custom can be found in the omnibus Pilot's Choice, along with the novel Scout's Progress.

Great story about Shan, Nova and Anthora's parents

Loved this book. NOTE: for those who may not have read the whole first review- THIS BOOK IS ONE OF THE TWO NOVELS CONTAINED IN PILOT'S CHOICE. I purchased Local Custom without realizing this fact, but don't really mind because I like to have multiple copies of the Liad novels- since I wear them out with repeated readings and like to lend them to others to enjoy.
This book gave me a better understanding of Korval. I read and loved the original Liad books but was always curious about how yos'Galens came to be half terran given the type of Liad society portrayed in earlier books (?can they be called sequels when they were written first?).
This book explained a lot of things to do with the dramliza, part of how the clan became so small, Daav and Er'Thom's relationship, etc. But, as with most of these books, it just wets my appetite for further stories Liad and Korval.

A Comedy of Manners

Local Custom (2000) is the first novel chronologically in the Liaden series, but the fourth novel published. Er Thom yos'Galan is caught in a emotional and moral bind: Liaden law requires him to provide children to the clan, yet he is infatuated with a Terran woman that he had meet several years before on Proziski. After a whirlwind affair, the two had parted, with Er Thom returning to his ship and trade route.

Now that his clan has demanded his child, Er Thom finds himself unable to become interested in any other woman. In a spirit of desperation, he borrows a ship from his foster brother and tracks down Anne Davis at her university. Their affair resumes immediately, as if no time has passed, but then Anne introduces Er Thom to their son, Shan yos'Galan. Suddenly their love affair runs afoul of a difference in customs. To Er Thom, the boy is a child of Clan Korval and Line yos'Galen and must be presented to the delm and thodelm to be accepted into the clan and line. Anne doesn't see him quite that way, but rather as her child, with Er Thom only the sperm donor. She refuses his offer of a contract marriage, seeing it as only another temporary fling.

This novel has elements of a comedy of manners, with misunderstandings occurring in all parties and with a few bitter feeling stirring the mix. However, such communication failures still occur in daily life even between close associates and still more often between different cultures on this planet. Nevertheless, the lovers struggle so hard against their misconceptions and freely open themselves to embarrassment with a spirit of trust, but are temporarily derailed by the thodelm.

This novel is a witty demonstration that etiquette -- i.e., manners -- is not universal. "When in Rome, do as the Romans do" is an ancient adage that will probably still be true when the Sun dies of old age. Proper behavior is relative to the culture, depending upon customs, mores, folkways and traditions, yet people often assume that their own, local etiquette applies in every situation and place.

This novel also points out that etiquette exists only to facilitate interpersonal relationships and that foolish insistence on rigid formalism can destroy rather than nurture such relationships. In many respects, this tale summarizes the theme of the whole series: societies grow only when they continue to diversify and expand their horizons. Er Thom and Anne add a breath of new life to a complacent and ossified Liaden society. Indeed a comedy, but also an epiphany.

Recommended for Lee & Miller fans and anyone who enjoys exotic cultures with a touch of mystery, farce and romance in a SF setting.

I used this book in preparing to teach a course (for senior citizens) on contemporary English grammar and usage. It was extremely helpful.

Explanation of a tricky tense is incorrect.

This is a well-written little book. Unfortunately there's a mistake in the explanation of the present perfect progressive tense. Present perfect progressive is not formed by using 'has been' or 'have been' and the past participle. It is formed by using 'has been' or 'have been' and base form+ing. For this reason, I cannot recommend it as a reference book about grammar.
